The NZD-USD exchange rate, compounded by higher fuel prices
and increases in shipping charges continues to impact on profit
margins previously enjoyed by timber exporters.
The export market has been offset to some extent by the strong New
Zealand domestic timber market driven by the very active housing
industry, (albeit flattening off to some extent) particulary in the
Northland, Auckland and the Bay of Plenty regions.
This was despite a temporary slow down in the housing sector due
to the leaking home syndrome and adverse publicity on timber
treatment.
Although experiencing tough trading times, sawmillers continue to
explore ways and means of improving efficiency within their
respective operations.
Pacific Timber Engineering Limited (PTEL) has become very active
during this time, in providing solutions to enable the various
sawmills we have been engaged on to increase production by reducing
mechanical lost motion, increasing productivity, reducing labour
and improving accuracy.
Accordingly, our company finished 2004 with a flourish which has
provided a healthy kick start for the 2005 year.
PTEL has been engaged in the following:
- Importation and assembly of a 22 bin drop sorter.
- Log carriages conversions from conventional bunk slides to dual
chrome round slide ways with tong log dogging.
- Manufacture and installation of PTEL designed 'Automatic fillet
handling systems'.
- Sawmill refurbishments, from log inhaul to finished timber outfeeds.
- Relocation and installation of planing systems.
- Dismantling relocation and commissioning of a kiln complex.
- Manufacture and supply ancillary equipment for kiln operations.
- Supply and commissioning of packet infeed systems including tilt
hoists, decks, unscramblers and board dealers.
Ongoing programmed maintenance programs at various sawmills
also kept our company busy during this period, resulting in ring
debarker overhauls, carriage rail replacements, carriage wheel
replacements, bandsaw wheel grinds and alignments and general
maintenance of machinery including, bearings, chains, wear strips etc.
In general, 2004 and 2005 have proved to be very satisfying, we
are proud of our involvement in the many mills that we are
are engaged in from time to time, enjoyed immensely working on
the various sites and are appreciative of the opportunity to do so. The Directors, Pacific Timber Engineering Ltd. |
